The starting point

What the rules require

Electronic invoicing is mandatory in Italy and comes with precise rules on format, transmission and storage. Getting it wrong means having the document rejected.

  • It is required by law

    Since 1 January 2019, under Legislative Decree 127/2015, all private parties in Italy must issue and receive invoices electronically and in no other way.

  • The format leaves no room for approximation

    Invoices must be generated in XML following the Agenzia delle Entrate standards: a file that does not comply is rejected by the Sistema di Interscambio.

  • Every invoice goes through the SdI

    The document is transmitted to the Sistema di Interscambio, which validates and tracks it. Only once approved does it reach its destination.

  • Ten years of storage

    Electronic invoices are subject to the same obligation as any other: they must be kept in digital storage for ten years.

How electronic invoicing works

The invoice, in XML format, is transmitted to the Agenzia delle Entrate’s Sistema di Interscambio, which validates and tracks it. Once approved, the document is delivered to the recipient. The same path applies in reverse, for suppliers’ invoices.
